When the Dolomites come alive: colours and lights in Val Gardena

When the larch trees begin to change colour, the days grow shorter and the low-hanging sun bathes the rock faces in shades of pink, orange and red; the phenomenon known as ‘Enrosadira’ becomes the central theme of a season that can still be enjoyed to the full in the great outdoors. It is time for the ‘Burning Dolomites’, a programme of guided walks which, until early November, takes tourists and enthusiasts on a journey of discovery through the landscapes of Val Gardena during the most evocative hours of the day. Among the unmissable events is the Thursday hike to Sëurasas, above Santa Cristina: a route of around five kilometres with a 400-metre ascent to reach a natural viewpoint over the Dolomites in the light of the setting sun, before returning through the woods – after a stop at a mountain hut – with headlamps. More challenging, however, is the Tuesday route towards Stevia and Alpe Juac, where the landscape naturally accompanies the setting sun. The magic of the colours transforming the landscape can also be savoured on two wheels, whether on a mountain bike or an e-bike, with over 600 kilometres of trails available and 22 daily excursions along forest tracks, ‘flow trails’ and scenic routes. Those seeking a challenge can tackle the Sellaronda MTB Tour or try their hand at the technical trails served by the Val Gardena Trail Arena’s facilities. Another aspect of autumn in Val Gardena is wellness. The Dolomitivity project (conceived by Dolomiti Superski) combines outdoor activities, nutrition and relaxation through various facilities (such as the Mar Dolomit centre in Ortisei), which offer swimming pools, wellness programmes featuring saunas and steam baths, and day spa packages. Finally, there is yet another way to discover the valley: its artistic tradition. Woodworking and sculpture are part of the local identity and are showcased at Enes dl’ert – Art FestiVal Gardena, an initiative created to bring together art, places, tradition and contemporary culture.
