Hunting trips and culinary delights between Volterra and San Giovanni d’Asso

Moving into the heart of the province of Pisa, Volterra also celebrates autumn with events dedicated to truffles and the traditional produce of Etruscan lands (24–25 and 31 October and 1 November), offering visitors the chance to combine a truffle hunt in the undergrowth with the discovery of a millennia-old historical heritage enclosed within ancient walls. Finally, in the heart of the Crete Senesi, San Giovanni d’Asso (a village now part of the municipality of Montalcino) hosts the historic White Truffle Fair of the Crete Senesi between November and December (7–8 and 14–15 November). The unmissable experience in Tuscany during autumn remains the truffle hunt at dawn, and for those wishing to sit down to a meal, Tuscan cuisine offers combinations of superb simplicity: fresh, hand-rolled tagliolini, fried eggs or a classic bruschetta with new extra-virgin olive oil, all generously topped with shavings of white truffle. From the taverns tucked away in the alleyways of San Miniato to the traditional trattorias of Volterra, right through to the historic wineries of San Giovanni d’Asso and Montalcino, autumn welcomes the traveller with a glass of Chianti Classico or Brunello.
