Tuscany: autumn in the three historic truffle regions

Autumn in Tuscany unfolds like a palette of warm, earthy hues, where the vineyards of Chianti are ablaze with colour, the Crete Senesi form golden geometric patterns, and the woods of the Apennines and the inland hills begin to exude the scent of damp and moss. It is against this backdrop that the region becomes one of the most sought-after destinations for lovers of the good life and food and wine tourism, offering a superb itinerary centred on its three historic hubs of the white truffle: San Miniato, Volterra and San Giovanni d’Asso. In November, the Pisan hills become the setting for the famous San Miniato National White Truffle Fair (scheduled for 14–15, 21–22 and 28–29 November), an event that has been attracting food lovers from far and wide to the historic centre of this medieval town for over half a century. Here, amongst picturesque alleyways and squares overlooking the Arno, the prized white truffle is paired with local specialities in a celebration of cookery demonstrations, traditional markets and guided tastings.
