In Valeggio for the art of tortellini and one of the most beautiful gardens in the world

Valeggio sul Mincio is a destination that manages to unite three dimensions: medieval history, gastronomic excellence and nature. The Scaligero Castle, which can be reached on foot from Borghetto by climbing a steep flight of steps through the woods, is a sighting fortification erected in 1200 and today a panoramic observation point (access to the towers and walkways is subject to a fee) with a view sweeping over the entire Mincio park. The culinary tradition of this village is well known and is closely linked to tortellino, also known as Nodo d'Amore, a term that originates from a romantic story set on the banks of the river. The preparation of the thin pastry and the filling has been handed down for generations, and the experience to be had at Tortellinando 1958, a workshop-restaurant where you can learn the art of preparing the typical Valeggio dish from scratch from the owner, Paola, who organises 'cooking classes' with a final tasting of the house specialities, from the classic meat tortellini with butter and sage to pumpkin tortellini with poppy seeds to the grand finale with Nodo d'Amore with broccoletto di Custoza with mature Monte Veronese cheese and walnut stracciatella. Another experience not to be missed in Valeggio is the Sigurtà Garden Park, considered one of the five most beautiful nature sites in the world. Built in 1617, it extends over 50 hectares and offers 10 km of paths (to be explored on foot, by bicycle or on board panoramic shuttles or small electric vehicles) among water gardens, ornamental lakes, flower beds, English-style lawns and a vegetal labyrinth, providing a truly unique atmosphere that has the Viale delle Rose as its most evocative and exciting point.
