Sanctuaries, gardens, castles: the hidden charm of South Garda and Upper Mincio
The Visconti Bridge and the magic of the Love Knot Festival
An 'obligatory' stop before wandering through the alleyways of Borghetto is the shop selling typical products at the Ristorante San Marco, whose tables directly overlook the river where the Visconteo Bridge, a grandiose defensive work built in the 14th century by Gian Galeazzo Visconti, towers. Almost 650 metres long, the structure still constitutes one of the most evocative and photographed architectural elements of this territory and has for years (the last edition, for now, dates back to 2023) been the scene of the Festa del Nodo d'Amore, a gastronomic event that is particularly popular and capable of attracting more than 3,500 guests from all over the world around a table more than a kilometre long. Legend has it that the bridge was an integral part of the city walls that stretched as far as Ferrara to divide the Gonzaga possessions from those of the Visconti and Estensi families, and it can be contemplated in all its ancient beauty from a small square in the village pedestrian street, next to one of the old mills, inside which there is a bar with a terrace overlooking the river.
