Sanctuaries, gardens, castles: the hidden charm of South Garda and Upper Mincio
The timeless charm of Borghetto sul Mincio
Lying along the course of the river and included in the circuit of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italia, this small mediaeval nucleus retains a charm that stems from the combination of, tradition and historical memory. It is a sort of small enclave between the provinces of Verona (to which the village belongs as a hamlet of Valeggio sul Mincio) and Mantua and a religious crossroads for pilgrims travelling along the Via Francigena, as well as an evocative film set for the 1953 film 'Senso' shot by Luchino Visconti with the participation of many of its residents. Strolling through the alleyways of Borghetto means alternating views of the river, ancient courtyards, typical taverns (such as the family-run Ristorante la Cantina) and iconic spots such as the corner of the mills with the wooden tables of Caffè Visconti in full view, the stone and wood bridge of San Marco and Corte Regina, an ancient structure used as a customs station and then as a guesthouse for religious tourism and finally (for the past few years) in a 4-star Relais.
