Sanctuaries, gardens, castles: the hidden charm of southern Lake Garda and the Upper Mincio

8/8Weekend

Monzambano and the archaeological heart of the morainic hills

Leaving the course of the Mincio and heading inland, the landscape changes once again, with the river valley giving way to the gentle undulations of the morainic hills that surround the southern shore of Lake Garda – a region shaped by glaciers and now characterised by vineyards (the Garda Colli Mantovani and local productions of Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet) and fortified villages. Monzambano is one of the gateways to this landscape, and its main attraction is the Scaligero Castle, whose medieval walls (a historical re-enactment festival is held in the inner courtyard every mid-September) and bell tower tell the story of centuries of territorial disputes, whilst the view from the main keep of the fortress offers a panoramic vista of the western bank of the Mincio. A few kilometres from Monzambano lie the Neolithic site of Tosina, whose artefacts dating back 6,000 and 3,500 years are on display in the Municipal Library, and one of the most surprising places in this area, Castellaro Lagusello, a small, perfectly preserved medieval village overlooking a lake with a distinctive heart-shaped outline, which houses important evidence of prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
