From Mladic to Milosevic: the key figures of the Balkan War have died

Ratko Mladic, one of the last war criminals to gain notoriety following the war that broke out with the break-up of the former Yugoslavia and the independence movements that affected the neighbouring Balkan countries in the early 1990s, has died. Among the most barbaric and well-known incidents, the Srebrenica massacre, the siege of Sarajevo and numerous instances of ethnic cleansing – most of which were carried out by the Serbian army and militias against Bosniaks – are particularly noteworthy.
