Radovan Karadžić

Karadžić, a psychiatrist and politician, served as president of the Serbian Republic of Bosnia from 1992 to 1996. He was then a fugitive from 1996 to 2008. After his capture, he was convicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia of genocide (for the Srebrenica massacre) and crimes against humanity during the same Srebrenica massacre, the siege of Sarajevo and campaigns of ethnic cleansing against non-Serbian civilians during the Bosnian War. In 2016, Karadžić was sentenced to 40 years’ imprisonment at first instance, a sentence that was commuted to life imprisonment on appeal in 2019. He has been detained in the United Kingdom since 2021.
