Mladic, also known as “the Butcher of Srebrenica”, a former Bosnian Serb military commander convicted of war crimes, has died in a prison hospital in The Hague at the age of 84. Mladic, who had suffered several strokes in recent years, had been nicknamed the “Butcher of Srebrenica” for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, one of the most tragic episodes of the war in Bosnia. In 2017, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for genocide by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.
