The 'sanctuary' of Lanai, Hawaiian Islands
Despite being one of the smallest Hawaiian islands in terms of size, Lanai is certainly not the least attractive. Quite the contrary. Once dotted with pineapple plantations, this strip of land jutting out of the Pacific Ocean is a favourite destination for tourists on the road in search of peace and tranquillity surrounded by unspoilt nature and extraordinary geological landscapes such as the ochre-coloured rocks of the 'Garden of the Gods'. The island's gem is a little piece of paradise for cat lovers, namely the Cat Sanctuary, a shelter in the southern part of Lanai that has been a safe haven for small felines for more than 20 years, currently housing more than 600 of them.
