Postcards from Vietnam amid young enthusiasm and ancient traditions
The imperial charm and wonders of Hue
One immediately understands, meanwhile, why the Nguyen royal dynasty decided to erect the capital of their feudal kingdom Hue in the dense bush, protected by the hills, and bathed by the Perfume River: its moss-covered pagodas, its many art deco palaces, and its markets overflowing with fruit arouse constant wonder. During their 143-year reign, pavilions and theatres were built, still the architectural emblem of the Citadel of Huế, where the tombs of the emperors Tu Duc, Minh Mang and Khai Dinh should also be visited. The atmosphere here is truly delightful.
You can discover the seven-storey tower of the Thien Mụ Pagoda, the Tu Hieu Monastery, where Thich Nhat Hanh, the country's best-loved poet and peace activist, spent his days as a novice monk. It is also very relaxing to cycle among the rice fields, perhaps reaching the covered bridge of Thanh Toan with its unmistakable tiled roof. Walk along Le Loi to admire the art deco details of La Residence Hotel and the imposing crimson buildings of Quoc Hoc High School.
