X7 and XM unique Bmw in the crosshairs of Chinese duties
Bmw has an advantageous position vis-à-vis the duties, as only the X7 and XM models, produced in the US factory in Spartanburg, South Carolina, are exposed to Chinese retaliation. Other models are built directly in China. The American factory is therefore strategic because it shelters BMW's suv models (the best sellers) even in the ongoing trade war between the US, China and the EU. Around 1,400 Bmw X3, X4, X6, X7 and XM vehicles are produced here in Spartanburg. It is the largest plant of the Bavarian group in the world with more than 9,000 employees working there. The two models affected by the duties in China are, as mentioned, the X7, the flagship of the Munich brand's suv range, and the XM, the first high-wheel model of the M division, specialising in high-performance cars of the BMW group. The X7 is a maxi-suv that makes the X5 look small. Under the bonnet are lightweight 48-volt hybrid engines with six or eight cylinders and considerable power. The XM, on the other hand, boasts a 4.4 cc twin-turbo V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain that travels 83 km on electric power.
