When Sarkozy took office at the Elysée Palace in May 2007, his second wife, Cécilia Ciganer-Albéniz, was at his side. However, since the beginning of his presidency, the first lady has had little public presence: she hardly participates in the electoral campaign and misses a few official engagements as Première Dame. These anomalies fuelled gossip of an impending marital crisis. The rumours became more and more insistent until the official announcement of the separation in October. For the first time in the history of the French Republic, a sitting president divorced his wife.
