2008 - International mediator: Sarkozy stops the war in Georgia

In August 2008, Sarkozy was confronted with a serious international crisis. In the separatist region of South Ossetia in Georgia, a blitzkrieg with Russia broke out. On this occasion, the French leader took on the role of an active mediator. On 12 August, ceasefire negotiations began and thanks to his diplomatic initiative, a six-point peace plan was drawn up, which ended the hostilities after only a few days of war. Sarkozy's actions in this crisis were praised both at home and abroad, and success consolidated his image as an influential statesman on the world stage.
