Aosta Valley. Pila, the mountain just a few minutes from the city

Less than twenty minutes from the centre of Aosta, thanks to the ski lifts leading to the ski resort of the same name, Pila reaffirms its status as an easily accessible mountain destination, further expanding its offering for summer 2026. The most significant new development is the summer opening of the cable car, which takes visitors up to the 2,723-metre-high Stella and provides a new access point to high-altitude trails and panoramic views of the main four-thousand-metre peaks of the Aosta Valley, from Mont Blanc to the Matterhorn, and from Monte Rosa to the Grand Combin. This is also the starting point for the Alta Balconata, a circular route along the ridges of the valley basin which is set to become the season’s signature trek. Mountain bike enthusiasts, meanwhile, will find plenty to enjoy in the bike park – which has been further expanded to include 17 trails totalling 55 kilometres, served by the lifts – and in the network of over 130 kilometres of routes dedicated to downhill, enduro, cross-country and e-bike riding. The range of hiking options is equally impressive, with 185 kilometres of new trails and guided activities designed to explore the mountain pastures, sheep farming and the natural beauty of the Aosta Valley, alongside educational trails for families. Among the most significant events are the Pila Ultra Trail (scheduled for 1 August), the Shepherds’ Festival at the Plan de l’Eyve mountain pasture (on the 9th) featuring a traditional lunch and local wines, and the staged readings of “Tales Under the Sky” by candlelight (on 15 August).
