Aosta Valley. La Thuile: unspoilt outdoor landscapes and experiences at the foot of Mont Blanc

Overlooking the westernmost side of the Aosta Valley and just a few kilometres from the French border, La Thuile offers a summer centred on outdoor activities and the vast Alpine landscapes. Mountain biking remains one of the destination’s key attractions, thanks to 170 kilometres of signposted trails, the Bike Park served by the ski lifts, and cross-border links that allow you to cycle between Italia and France, even on e-bikes. Alongside trails designed for more experienced riders, there are family-friendly routes and MTB schools for those wishing to take up the sport. The range of outdoor experiences also includes hiking trails to Lake Arpy, Lake Deffeys and the Bella Comba waterfalls, horse riding, angling and visits to the Little St Bernard Pass, where the prehistoric cromlech, the Roman mansio and the ancient hospice recount centuries of history along one of the main Alpine passes. There is no shortage of options centred on the local culinary culture, with guided tours of the area’s mountain pastures and farms, whilst the restaurant offers a truly unique experience Punto G in Les Suches (accessible on foot or via a 15-minute chairlift ride), featuring a summer swimming pool at an altitude of 2,080 metres from which, on clear days, you can admire the Rutor, Mont Blanc and even the Matterhorn. Among the most popular events combining music and sport are the high-altitude symphonies at the Chanousia Botanical Garden (8 August) and the ‘Open-Air Museum e-Bike Challenge’ (on the 27th), which sees cyclists competing in unspoilt mountain landscapes such as the Traversette or Lac Sans Fond.
