The Other Mountain: Adventures and Discoveries from the Maritime Alps to the Friulian Dolomites
Lombardy. Valtellina: mountain passes, vineyards and culinary experiences
It is one of those Alpine regions where nature, sport and local traditions coexist in perfect harmony. From the terraced vineyards that climb the Rhaetian slopes to the border glaciers, summer invites you to plan a trip that combines outdoor activities, ancient villages and the flavours of the mountains. For cycling enthusiasts, the Upper Valtellina is the realm of great climbs, from the Stelvio Pass to the Mortirolo via the Gavia, closed to motorised traffic on selected days (as part of the ‘Enjoy Stelvio Valtellina’, extended until 19 September) to hand these epic routes back to cyclists and walkers by closing the roads. The cycling and hiking routes, stretching from Morbegno to Livigno, are countless and run alongside trail running routes and paths leading to unspoilt natural areas just waiting to be discovered, such as the Orobie Park. In summer, Valtellina invites you to slow down in various ways, from picnics amongst the rows of vines that cover the slopes behind Sondrio and Bianzone to stops in the meadows of Val di Mello, from the viewpoints of Valmalenco and Aprica to the shores of the Lakes of Cancano (where the Energy2Run mountain race takes place on 30 August). After sunset, enthusiasts will find plenty of events dedicated to stargazing, with guided evenings at the ‘Giuseppe Piazzi’ Observatory. Looking at the calendar, some of the summer’s most significant events include the Rider Cup Downhill 2026, scheduled to take place in Bormio between 31 July and 2 August, and Calici Valtellina, the food and wine event that transforms the historic centre of Sondrio into an open-air wine cellar on the night of San Lorenzo, 10 August.
