Ferrari Light Sound

The sound of the Ferrari Luce has been treated as one of the most sensitive issues of the project. In an electric Ferrari, the reference source of the heat engine is missing and the risk is twofold. On the one hand building an artificial sound, and on the other accepting a silence that reduces the dialogue between car and driver. Ferrari has chosen a third way, at least in its declared intentions. The sound must be authentic and functional, i.e. derived from real mechanics and useful for driving. The system therefore does not generate a synthetic timbre, but takes the sound from the source. A precision accelerometer installed in the rear axle housing picks up vibrations and metallic textures produced by rotating organs, gears and electrical machines in real time. The signal is then filtered, equalised and amplified through a system developed and patented by Ferrari. The comparison used by Ferrari is that of the electric guitar, where the vibration physically exists and is made audible through amplification and signal processing. The processing amplifies the components considered noble and attenuates the less pleasant ones. The declared result is a living sound, with continuous micro-variations, linked to the analogue nature of the source. Ferrari emphasises that the timbre remains distinct from that of an internal combustion engine, but maintains a harmonic structure that can be traced back to the physics of rotating machines.amplification is not always present with the same intensity. It becomes more expressive in Performance, when the sound feedback serves to reinforce the dialogue between driver and car. In Range, the comfort of silence prevails. In Tour it is possible to have a sporty driving style with the sound switched off, while continuing to use the Torque Shift Management and the paddles. The sound emission takes place on two levels. An outer layer generates a natural wave front, split in proportion to the torque delivered between front and rear. A second internal level adds detail and high-fidelity nuances. The car is thus perceptible on the outside as it arrives and passes, while the passenger compartment receives a signal consistent with the driving action. The acoustic theme also includes on-board comfort. The absence of the combustion engine eliminates many masking sources, so rolling, aerodynamic, axle and vibration noises become more noticeable. Ferrari intervenes with dual-stage axle mounts, selective electromagnetic noise cancellation strategies, optimised crystals and targeted distribution of sound absorbers. The declared result is the most comfortable Ferrari ever, without sacrificing the brand's dynamic characteristics.
