In the Lake District between cycle paths, gardens and scenic trails

In the north of Piedmont, spring is transformed into a mosaic of outdoor experiences that intertwine in a widespread way, combining the unmistakable landscape of Lake Maggiore with the yet-to-be-discovered mountains and valleys of the Ossola. There are many proposals that make this area attractive, starting with the thematic routes designed also for families, such as the itinerary connecting Omegna to Monte Zuoli, with the "Gardens of the Cake in the Sky" inspired by Gianni Rodari, to the panoramic ring of Sass del Pizz above Nebbiuno, overlooking four lakes. For those seeking a more historical dimension, in Vogogna you can breathe in the medieval atmosphere among the architecture of the Palazzo Pretorio, the Visconti Castle and the remains of the Longobard fortress. Spring is also the ideal season for cycling and the Toce Cycle Route, which connects the Ossola Valley to Lake Maggiore is definitely an itinerary (47 km long) to be considered, while the Lake Orta tour combines panoramic views and cultural stops such as the Sacro Monte (UNESCO site) and the Island of San Giulio. Shorter but more evocative is the route between Cannobio and the Orrido di Sant'Anna, running between lakeside promenades, natural gorges and stretches surrounded by greenery. Until early summer, the Distretto dei Laghi offers the spectacle of the great blossoms in the gardens of the Terre Borromeo, the Botanical Gardens of Villa Taranto and the Giardino Alpinia. Last but not least, there is the sporting dimension and the appointments to mark in the calendar are the Vibram Trail Mottarone (on 2 and 3 May) between Lakes Maggiore and Orta and the historic Valle Intrasca Marathon scheduled for 7 June in Verbania.
