A few weeks earlier it had been the turn of Kristi Noem, who was removed from the Department of Homeland Security at the end of a period marked by high political tensions.

Criticism, which came from both parties, had focused on the handling of migration policies and on certain federal operations that had ended up at the centre of controversy, particularly after violent incidents in Minneapolis.

However, Trump chose not to remove her from the administration altogether, giving her a new post as special envoy. Markwayne Mullin was appointed in her place.
