Trump, all the president's (former) men: from loyalists to dismissed
In his second term, Donald Trump's administration was initially more stable than in his first, which was marked by a continuous turnover at the top. In recent months, however, the situation has started to change: the removal of two cabinet members in the space of a few weeks has turned the spotlight back on a rather 'dynamic' personnel management.
On 2 April 2026 Trump announced the replacement of Attorney General Pam Bondi, shortly after the dismissal of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. These were the first Cabinet departures in this second term, which came at a politically sensitive time, amid criticism over migration policies and controversy over the handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case.
Outside the Cabinet, several other executives had already left their posts. These include prominent figures such as Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk, as well as numerous officials whose appointments were withdrawn or terminated by Trump himself.
The president would also consider replacing the Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard.
On 12 May, the commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (Fda), Marty Makary, also left office. He resigned, writes the New York Times, after weeks of pressure and rumours that Donald Trump was planning to torpedo him.
According to the newspaper, he resigned over concerns about the Trump administration's decision to allow fruit-flavoured electronic cigarettes.
The commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (Fda), Marty Makary, is leaving office. He resigned, writes the New York Times, after weeks of pressure and rumours that Donald Trump was planning to torpedo him. According to the newspaper, which cites four informed sources, Makary resigned over concerns about the Trump administration's decision - which he disagreed with - to allow fruit-flavoured e-cigarettes. "He was having a hard time," the tycoon added, speaking to reporters before departing for a visit to China and the expected summit with Xi Jinping.
