The removal of Pam Bondi from heading the Justice Department came after weeks of tension with the White House. According to inside sources, Trump was dissatisfied with both the handling of politically sensitive files and the slow prosecution of some opponents.

In announcing the decision, the President nevertheless adopted conciliatory tones, praising Bondi as 'a great patriot' and thanking her for her work. A move to the private sector is planned for her.

The leadership of the department has been handed over to Deputy Todd Blanche on an interim basis, while the succession game remains open for the long term.
