Sanctuaries, gardens, castles: the hidden charm of South Garda and Upper Mincio
Monzambano and the archaeological soul of the moraine hills
Leaving the course of the Mincio and heading inland, the landscape changes again and the river valley leaves room for the gentle undulations of the morainic hills surrounding southern Garda, an area shaped by glaciers and today characterised by vineyards (Garda Colli Mantovani and local production of Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet) and fortified villages. Monzambano is one of the gateways to this landscape and its main attraction is the Scaligero Castle, whose medieval walls (a historical re-enactment festival is organised in the inner garden every mid-September) and bell tower tell of centuries of territorial disputes, while the panorama from the main keep of the fortress offers a panoramic view of the western side of the Mincio River. A few kilometres from Monzambano are the Neolithic site of Tosina, whose finds dating back 6000 and 3500 years are on display in the Municipal Library, and one of the most surprising places in this area, Castellaro Lagusello, a small perfectly preserved medieval village overlooking a characteristic heart-shaped lake that preserves important evidence of prehistoric pile-dwelling settlements recognised as a UNESCO heritage site.
