On two wheels through the hills, along the river and past major engineering works

To explore the hills and the countryside that stretches southwards towards the plain, there is, apart from travelling by car, an even simpler and healthier way: hop on a bike and follow back roads, river embankments and unpaved cycle paths that link villages, wineries and places of artistic interest. The Sentiero degli Ezzolini, for example, follows the Muson stream from the slopes of Monte Grappa down to Padua, passing through the walled town of Castelfranco Veneto, and offers the chance to take a detour to the centre of Asolo or to stop at San Vito di Altivole, home to the Tomba Brion, a funerary complex built in the 1970s and regarded as one of Carlo Scarpa’s most important works. More challenging is the Montello Circuit, which alternates between stretches along the River Piave and hilly roads, retracing the route where the 1985 World Cycling Championships were held and passing by the famous Sanctuary of Sant’Eustachio. The cycle tourism experience then extends to the Prosecco hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, across the river, with routes for road bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. These range from more accessible routes, such as the one between Valdobbiadene and Col San Martino, to more challenging loops that wind through the vineyards and along the edge of the Pre-Alps. The varying levels of difficulty all share the vineyard-dotted landscape as their common thread.
