La Rocca, the viewpoint that tells the story of the local area

It takes just fifteen to twenty minutes’ walk to climb from the historic centre of Asolo to the summit of Monte Ricco and reach one of the most fascinating vantage points in the whole area. The route passes through one of the town’s ancient gates and ends with a steep flight of steps leading up to the fortress, built for defensive purposes at the behest of the Bishop of Treviso between the late 12th and early 13th centuries. Situated at an altitude of around 316 metres, the Rocca di Asolo (the symbol of the Asolo Prosecco DOCG logo) retains an imposing military structure, with very thick walls and a distinctive nine-sided layout, which offers a perfect view of the surrounding landscape from above. The walkway offers a 360-degree view that brings together, at a single glance, the village’s curious scorpion-like shape, the Montello hills, the Montegrappa massif with the ossuary dedicated to those who fell in the World War, the dome of the Canoviano Temple, the Piave valley and the vineyards of the Prosecco di Valdobbiadene and Asolo appellations. And it is precisely at the top of the Rocca, looking out beyond its walls, that the description Giosuè Carducci used to define Asolo as the ‘city of a hundred horizons’ takes on a tangible meaning.
