'The Road to Cortina': Images and memories of the first Italian Winter Games
At the Gallerie d'Italia in Milan, the 1956 Winter Olympics are back in the spotlight until 3 May in an exhibition that interweaves sport, history and national history. 'The Road to Cortina. VII Olympic Winter Games 1956', curated by Aldo Grasso, offers a selection of 86 images (84 of which in black and white and two in colour) from the press agency Publifoto Milano that retrace the event from the preparatory stages: from the construction of the sports infrastructure, such as the Olympic Ice Stadium and the Trampoline Italia, to the 'behind the scenes' of the competitions. Alongside photographs of athletes training and competing, there are also shots of the public, the journalists present, the moments of anticipation and celebration and those commissioned by the companies that invested in communication related to the Games. On the occasion of the exhibition, the entire nucleus of photographs (about 1,400) on Cortina 1956 preserved by the Intesa Sanpaolo Publifoto Archive has been restored, digitised and made accessible online.
