Cultural Olympiad, must-see exhibitions dedicated to the mountains
Trento and Bolzano talk about winter sports
The Piedicastello Galleries in Trentino's capital city will host 'Competition - Rings of Conjunction' until 6 January 2027, the third and final chapter of a project launched in 2024 ahead of the Games. The exhibition tells the story of sport as a drive for improvement and overcoming limits, exploring the central role of emotions in Olympic and Paralympic disciplines: happiness, fear, anger, surprise, sadness and disgust become keys to enter the athlete's mind before, during and after the competition. The route, articulated in large audiovisual immersive installations, is based on materials from the Lausanne Olympic Museum Archives and is enriched by interactive stations such as "Face Recognition" and "Words of Olympians", which put the visitor in direct dialogue with the faces and voices of the champions. The exhibition closes with a look at the 'competition theatres' of Olympic and Paralympic competitions in Val di Fiemme. Also in Trento, the Castello del Buonconsiglio offers until 15 March "Winter in art. Landscapes, allegories and everyday life", a journey into the past that recounts the cold months between reality and imagination. More than fifty works show how winter has been represented over the centuries, from the everyday life of the working classes to aristocratic pastimes to Renaissance and Baroque allegories. Among paintings, sculptures, ancient texts and a curious collection of sledges from the 18th century, there are also surprising references to winter sports, such as a famous curling scene painted in the 16th century. In Bolzano, on the other hand, there is a stop at the Palazzo Mercantile, where the exhibition 'Winter sports in art' brings together works by masters such as Paul Flora, Albin Egger-Lienz, Fortunato Depero, Lyonel Feininger and Victor Vasarely from 18 February to 25 March for an interpretation of the mountain as a symbolic and contemporary space.
