The Estense Walls and the 'green' side of Ferrara

The Mura Estensi of Ferrara are a unique jewel where ancient Renaissance military architecture merges with a wonderful urban park. The route, characterised by towers, imposing bastions and rich vegetation, winds its way for nine kilometres, offering evocative views of the city of the Este. It begins at Porta Paola, in a kaleidoscope of colours that changes with the seasons. It retraces the southern walls towards the Bagni Ducali and ascends the eastern city wall until it rejoins Punta della Montagnola. From here, it retraces the northern curtain wall and then descends along the salients of Porta Catena, towards the Baluardi della Fortezza and back to Porta Paola. The stretch between the Torrione di San Giovanni and the Torrione del Barco is particularly fascinating, creating a peaceful green refuge in the heart of the city.

Through the four main entrances, one can easily explore the numerous historical and cultural treasures that Ferrara holds, moving between 'inside' and 'outside' the walls.
