A weekend in Zagreb: two cities in one, where you can soak up the spirit of Croatia
The rhythm of the city: blue trams and coffee
To get a feel for the rhythm, soak up the atmosphere and gain at least a little insight into Zagreb’s culture – as the tourist guides who show visitors around the city also suggest – all you need to do is hop on a tram, the famous ‘tramvaj’. The first ones entered service in 1891 and even today these blue trams (tickets and information can be found on the official website of the transport company ZET) criss-cross the city centre, carrying locals and tourists between the Lower Town and the neighbourhoods further away from the historic centre. The other ‘attraction’ not to be missed before leaving the capital is a coffee – an experience to be savoured at a leisurely pace in one of the many cafés in the city centre (one in particular stands out: the Teatar Bar at Ul. Huga Badalića 26 and Tratinska ulica): choose a table, perhaps on a terrace, place your order and let time slip by whilst chatting with the other patrons or simply watching the world go by. “Idemo na kavu”, let’s go for a coffee: if you hear a Zagreb local say this, don’t hesitate for a moment to accept the invitation.
