Piazza Affari recorded its worst session ever, with the FTSE MIB index down 16.92%. This slump was mainly caused by the growing concern over the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to restrictive measures and global economic uncertainties. In addition, US President Donald Trump's decision to suspend flights from Europe to the US increased tensions in the markets. The measures announced by the European Central Bank were also perceived as insufficient by investors, contributing to the panic. In response to the collapse, Consob temporarily banned short selling on 85 Italian equities.
