This collapse was mainly caused by the global financial crisis triggered by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers on 15 September 2008, which triggered a crisis of confidence in the international banking system. The week from 6 to 10 October 2008 is remembered as one of the worst for global stock markets, with significant losses on many European stock exchanges. In particular, the Italian banking sector was heavily penalised, with stocks such as Banco Popolare and Intesa Sanpaolo suffering significant losses.
