Piazza Affari slumped 12.48%, the worst in its history so far. This drop was caused by the outcome of the referendum in the United Kingdom, known as Brexit, in which the majority of voters voted to leave the European Union. The decision generated uncertainty and concern in global financial markets, negatively affecting the major European stock exchanges, including Milan. In particular, the Italian banking sector was heavily penalised during the day.
