Between the Brenta and the Pale di San Martino, on the great routes of the Dolomites

Two distinct groups of Dolomites, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, representing two different ways of experiencing high altitude through multi-day adventures involving mountain huts, via ferratas and grand traverses suspended between rock and sky. It is one of the most authentic facets of the Trentino mountains and offers some of the most spectacular routes in the Alps. The Via delle Bocchette, for example, remains one of the great classics of mountaineering and hiking: a network of via ferratas that crosses the Brenta massif at high altitude, winding along ledges and rock faces and linking historic mountain huts such as the Tuckett, the Brentei and the Alimonta. The summer of 2026 will also mark the reopening of the Tosa Pedrotti Mountain Hut, a historic refuge at the foot of the Bocca di Brenta, which will once again become one of the key hubs of the group’s hiking network, where one of the most comprehensive experiences is the Dolomiti di Brenta Trek, a major 96-kilometre loop divided into eleven stages, which can also be broken down into shorter routes. A little further east, the Pale di San Martino offer a completely different landscape, with a vast rocky plateau criss-crossed by routes such as the Dolomiti Palaronda Trek, which can be completed in three to eight days with overnight stays at the Rosetta, Pradidali, Mulaz, Velo della Madonna and Treviso. Among the possible destinations for more experienced hikers and mountaineers are also routes such as the Dolomiti Trek King in Val di Fassa, the Alta Via del Granito in the Lagorai and the Translagorai, a long traverse amongst alpine lakes and high-altitude pastures, ideal for those seeking a more secluded mountain experience. Finally, the Alta Via del Granito is particularly noteworthy for its unique character: a three-day circular traverse winding through the Lagorai Range (in the Cima d’Asta – Cime di Rava range), traversing a landscape characterised by this rock and ancient military trails, and offering a glimpse of a rugged and unspoilt Trentino.
