San Pellegrino Pass: from sunrises over the Dolomites to starry skies
More than just a destination, the San Pellegrino Pass is a place of transit that invites you to slow down, to pause and take your time discovering the profound charm of the mountains. Between Moena and Falcade, along the pass linking Trentino to the village of Falcade in the province of Belluno, the sweeping panoramas of the Dolomites serve as the starting point for experiences that bring together nature, geology, culture and culinary delights. The Col Margherita cable car takes you up to 2,500 metres, to the Dolomiti Viewpoint, one of the most spectacular vantage points in the Dolomites, overlooking the Marmolada, Civetta, Pelmo, Pale di San Martino and Lagorai. The most evocative event of the summer is ‘Sunrise at Col Margherita’ (scheduled for 6, 13 and 20 August), when visitors ascend to the summit at sunrise, accompanied on each occasion by a nature photographer, geologists from MUSE in Trento with live musical accompaniment, or the writer Matteo Righetto, who weaves together readings and stories dedicated to the mountains. The pleasure of experiencing the Dolomites as an open-air classroom can also be enjoyed by taking part in the ‘I Monti di Cristallo’ excursions and the Geo Walk, a geological trail that explains how, millions of years ago, these peaks were once a tropical sea. Equally enjoyable are the culinary events, featuring itinerant tastings of alpine dairy products amongst the mountain huts in the Le Buse area, and the art of the Bosco degli Artisti, an open-air museum featuring wooden sculptures, installations and workshops for children. As darkness falls, the silence of the high altitude gives way (on 7 August) to ‘Dolomiti sotto le stelle’ (The Dolomites under the stars), an evening of stargazing from Col Margherita led by the Agordini Amateur Astronomers.
