Travelling to Advent locations on both sides of the Alps
Between castles and magic lights: markets and more in Merano and Environs
There are not only the famous Merano Christmas markets, but also the more intimate and atmospheric ones, set up in castles and small villages: in Lana and Lagundo, South Tyrolean Christmas has a more intimate and authentic charm and tradition meets the curiosity of visitors. From 28 November to 31 December, Lana's Capuchin Garden becomes a wonderland with 'Stardust', a market enlivened by food stands and the handmade creations of artisans, farmers and artists, which creates a unique atmosphere with the warm lights of traditional breweries (such as Pfeffenlecher) and the decorated shop windows of the old town centre. On Advent weekends, there is no shortage of symbolic moments such as the Krampus parade with St Nicholas on 5 December and the nativity scene exhibition. On 31 December, the Capuchin Church hosts a piano concert bathed in the light of hundreds of candles, while at the stroke of midnight the sky above Braunsberg Castle lights up with fireworks. A few kilometres away, the Lagundo market opens its doors every weekend from 28 November and (from 29 December to 4 January 2026) in the church square with live music and a programme designed for children. At Castel Tirolo, also in the vicinity of Merano (to which it is connected by a shuttle service), Christmas lights up every weekend and from 5 to 8 December 2025, transforming the ancient manor into a festive stage with cribs, food stalls, craft stands and theatre performances for children, with the appearance of the Krampus to remind us of ancient Alpine traditions. Until 6 January, the magic of Christmas can also be experienced at the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, where Lumagica, a path of lights and interactive installations inspired by the 'Journey of Sissi', is staged. And finally, the Merano Christmas Markets (from 28 November to 6 January), to celebrate Advent in the city: a short distance from the Terme (thermal baths), dressed up for an extraordinary wellness experience in the swimming pool, the little houses overlooking the Passeggiata del Passirio (Passer Promenade) offer local crafts and typical dishes and are the ideal accompaniment to the Christmas Village set up in Piazza della Rena with the gourmet chalet of Michelin-starred chef Egon Heiss, creative workshops and areas dedicated to ancient crafts. Don't miss the "Vivi Merano" programme with shows for everyone such as the Pop Symphony Orchestra concert.
