When travelling rhymes with rows, tastings and wineries
From Lower Piedmont to Western Liguria
A destination that wine lovers cannot overlook because it is rich in charm and history is Gavi, in the province of Alessandria, where Piedmont begins to feel the call of the nearby Liguria. Here, white wine is produced from Cortese grapes (Gavi Docg), the palate is delighted by historic restaurants (such as Cantine del Gavi) and trattorias in the rows (Da Renato ai Pessenti), the wine cellars of the denomination are visited and the charm of time can be experienced at Forte di Gavi, a military colossus that dominates the village and today hosts exhibitions and installations, and at the archaeological area of Libarna, an ancient Roman city and crossroads of trade in ancient times. Descending beyond the first formations of the Apennines, in an hour's drive you are on the sea of the Riviera Ligure di Ponente, an area renowned for two fine white wines, namely both Pigato and Vermentino, and for Rossese Doc di Dolceacqua, a light red wine that goes perfectly with the typical cuisine of one of the most beautiful villages of the entire Riviera. The wine journey in Liguria is therefore a game of discovery among the terraces and medieval villages along the coast, with their narrow streets, panoramic terraces and ancient churches overlooking the sea, such as that of San Giovanni in Cervo, between Alassio and Diano Marina. A glass of indigenous wine can then be enjoyed in Finalborgo (Finale Ligure) admiring its imposing fortresses, in Varigotti to fantasize with its pastel-coloured houses and memories of Saracen domination, or again in Noli to relive, among its alleys and walls, the splendour of when this small town was a Maritime Republic allied with Genoa.
