When travelling rhymes with rows, tastings and wineries

7/8Ideas and Places

Between Soave and Asolo, wine and history, art and territory are celebrated

Synonymous with wine, the heart of the renowned DOC production of the same name, as well as the headquarters of the consortium for its protection: Soave, a village of about 7,000 inhabitants nestled among hills of vineyards, is also history, and the 10th-century Scaliger castle is the most evident and majestic expression of its intact medieval physiognomy. Most of the monuments of historical interest face Via Roma, the ancient Roman cardo, and are the parish church of S. Lorenzo (from 1303), the Cavalli Palace in Venetian Gothic style (1411) and the Palace of Justice (1375). Returning to wine, the appointment not to be missed falls far from the harvest season (the third weekend in May, with the 'Medieval Festival of the white Soave') but the pleasure of visiting the village and the Soave cellars has no seasonality. For a stay in harmony with the place, an address to consider is the Antica Corte, an estate with a view of Illasi Castle and an ideal starting point for tasting tours and nature treks. From Soave, an hour's drive takes you to the land of prosecco, and more precisely to Villa Barbaro di Maser, a splendid residence built by Palladio in the mid-16th century: here, on 12 October, the event celebrating the first 40 years of activity of the Consorzio Tutela Vini Asolo Montello will be staged, an unmissable opportunity to taste its DOCG labels and discover the wonders of this territory. From the village of Asolo, the "city of a hundred horizons" perched on the Treviso hills and destination of travels for men of letters, to Possagno, where you can visit the Tempo Canoviano and the house where Canova was born, now a museum.
