3 June 1998 saw the most serious train accident in Germany and one of the most serious involving a high-speed train. A Munich-Hamburg train derailed and crashed into an overpass after stopping in Hannover.
In the mad rush, it destroyed, by derailing, a 300-tonne bridge, which then collapsed onto the number 5 car of the train.
In total 101 people were killed and 88 others injured.
The cause of the derailment was a crack on a wheel.
