In Japan for the 'joya no kane' ritual

An unusual experience in 2026 is to participate in the ritual of 'joya no kane' in one of Tokyo's temples: 108 chimes, like the original 108 sins of the Buddhist creed, to absolve sins committed during the year. On New Year's Eve, travellers can then stroll among Tokyo's illuminations, enjoy a magical atmosphere and sample a traditional brunch of osechi ryori. Don't miss the Hatsumode, the first shrine visit of the year, as well as the Metropolitan Gardens, eight of which open their doors and host special events. Another experience not to be missed is a stay in a ryokan - the traditional Japanese inn - which is the equivalent of immersing oneself in an ancient art of hospitality, the fruit of over a thousand years of history. At the heart of this experience is the concept of omotenashi, or hospitality as a disinterested, sincere, attentive, discreet and deeply human gesture. It is not just welcoming: it is the search for harmony and care. In the ryokan, every detail is thought out to offer balance, harmony and contemplation: from the design of the rooms with tatami floors and sliding doors, to the seasonal cuisine and the regenerating experience of the onsen, the natural thermal baths, often in the open air, immersed in landscape settings of breathtaking beauty. And to get even more in touch with Japanese culture, one can attend a sumo tournament, a very popular martial art in Japan. Famous tournaments are held at the Ryogoku Kokugikan national stadium in Tokyo in January, May and September.
