Trenčín and Oulu: two cities awarded the title of European Capital of Culture 2026
Two cities will share the title of European Capital of Culture in 2026. They are Trenčín, Slovakia, and Oulu, Finland. Throughout the year, the two cities will present a wide range of cultural events, artistic collaborations and immersive experiences that will bring together local communities, international artists and European audiences. Both Trenčín and Oulu will use the transformative power of culture to reinvent their cities, promote innovation and strengthen their place in the European cultural landscape. In Trenčín, the celebrations will begin with the opening ceremony, which will be held from 13 to 15 February 2026. At the beginning of February, two major art projects will be presented, while spring will see the second edition of the Light Art Festival Trenčín, which will illuminate streets and public spaces with large-scale projections, interactive light installations and artworks. Throughout the summer, the city will see the revival of Splanekor 2.0, a unique local event. Meanwhile, the former railway bridge will open up the centre of the city, offering a view of the castle and the old town, and will become a new cultural venue with a floating stage and lively spaces along the river, a vibrant symbol of Trenčín's contemporary culture and heritage. The Trenčín region offers a wealth of cultural monuments, including majestic castles, traditional folk festivals and a thriving art scene. It is also renowned for its spa towns. Oulu, on the other hand, is Finland's fifth largest city, renowned for its creativity and innovative spirit. In winter it is surrounded by an icy sea and offers unique activities, while in summer its beautiful landscapes - including forests, rivers, lakes and hills - are the perfect setting for adventure and relaxation, with its well-maintained cycle paths and Nallikari beach, ideal for relaxing by the sea. The city is also known for lively and original events. The World Air Guitar Championships are a world-famous extravaganza. In winter, the Frozen People festival transforms the city with electronic music and Nordic art into an ice and snow scenario, providing a truly unique experience.
