Getting around Oslo by public transport is really easy and pleasant and the advice is to get yourself (also digitally via a special app), the Oslo Pass, with which you have access to the entire urban transport network and some museums. The cost for 24 hours is 550 kroner, the equivalent of about 55 euros. The pedestrian precinct along Karl Johans gate, the main shopping street, at the end of which you can see the royal residence, is the beating heart of the capital, with its fashionable shop windows, early 20th-century buildings (including the imposing Parliament building) and various kinds of bars and restaurants. To eat, the choice can range from very different proposals. The Paleet Food Hall or the Steen & Strøm Food Hall, both centrally located, are lively and relaxed places offering Italian, Japanese, Greek, Thai, Mexican and Indian cuisine with accompanying cocktails. Those who want to savour the Norwegian gastronomic tradition of fishing should head for the Lofoten Fish Restaurant and try tartare, fried king crab and the prized meat of Skrei, the cod caught on the northern coast. At Dovrehallen Bar and Restaurant, at Storgata 22, a few dozen metres from the Clarion Hotel (one of Oslo's most famous and popular venues for evening events) and Central Station, it feels like stepping back to the middle of the last century. A rustic restaurant with a mostly local clientele, it serves traditional dishes (reindeer is recommended) with minimal but more than efficient service. Finally, for an aperitif or an after-dinner drink, there are two addresses to consider. The first leads to Svanen, at 13 Karl Johans gate: housed in an 1896 building that once housed a pharmacy (the Svaneapoteket) and beautifully preserved with marble columns and dark wood panelling, it is Oslo's most famous cocktail bar. The second is Himkok Bar, at Storgata 27, listed as one of the World's 50 Best Bars in 2022, a high-end speakeasy on several̀ floors with Italian bartenders.
