Postcards from Vienna to discover in ten adventures
The architecture of the Hauptbahnhof, Piano and the Belvedere 21
Wien Hauptbahnhof with its raised canopies similar to aeroplane platforms, its roof composed of a mesh of 24 different intertwined rhomboid steel segments is the work of contemporary architecture that has changed the face of Vienna. This project was designed by Ernst Hoffmann, Albert Wimmer and Theo Hotz who also designed the residential and accommodation skyscrapers surrounding the revolutionary new railway station in the Belvedere District. Here, Renzo Piano has designed five bodies built for Signa Development that start from a floor raised by tall columns, under which an embankment develops: one of them now houses the Andaz Vienna Am Belvedere and that Rooftop Bar Aurora from which there is an extraordinary view of this area of the Austrian capital in continuous evolution. Opposite is the Belvedere 21 Museum where the pavilion designed by Karl Schwanzer for the 1958 World Exhibition in Brussels has been extended to accommodate temporary exhibitions such as the one dedicated to sculptor Fritz Wotruba and that Lucy Bar with its intriguing and colourful design.
