Tea in the Greenhouse and Evening Concerts in the Giardini della Mortella
Susana Walton was the soul of the Giardini della Mortella where it is nice to go in the early evening, just before the conductor's baton gives the unmistakable signal to the young musicians to strike the first note. Indeed, concerts are held throughout the summer in the amphitheatre located right above the studio where William Walton used to compose his operas and where the museum that also exhibits Emanuele Luzzati's scenic sketches is now located. If Russell Page, master of garden architecture, designed the avenues, the position of the fountains, it was Susana, more than her husband William often touring the world, who devoted her hands and imagination to creating this botanical and even ironic Eden. The composer would send her seeds and seedlings in shoeboxes and she would transplant them at Mortella. The upper part exalts the Mediterranean species, and allows you to smell and admire amazing flowers and species such as the water lilies of the Ganges and the Nile. The Temple of the Sun, the Thai pagoda and the Nymphaeum reveal Susana's playful character, which is still so present that one can imagine her strolling through the garden, now lovingly tended by Alessandra Vinciguerra, wearing one of those hats of hers that she never took off even when the current King of England came here. A tea in the garden inside the ancient greenhouse is an unmissable custom.
