The itinerary of Tridentum, the underground city

Tridentum Trentino Marketing-Marco Gober

For archaeology enthusiasts, it is worth visiting the Roman Villa of Orpheus, open to the public since June 2023 in the underground area of Via Rosmini. This is a significant example of a Roman stately residence, which has become part of the 'Tridentum' itinerary, a route that allows visitors to discover some of the most important archaeological evidence of the ancient city. The villa takes its name from the large polychrome mosaic of Orpheus, preserved in the reception room: a 56-square-metre mosaic carpet, in the centre of which is depicted the mythical figure seated on a rock while playing the lyre to enchant animals with his music. The value of the decoration and the complexity of the installation testify to the prestige of the dwelling and its owner, who probably belonged to one of the wealthiest families in Tridentum. Another important site on the city's archaeological itinerary is the archaeological area of Palazzo Lodron, in the basement of the palace of the same name in the historic centre of Trento. The site preserves the remains of a southern quarter of ancient Tridentum, one of the most significant testimonies of the Roman city, thanks to the presence of a section of the city walls, a street, the remains of a tower, private dwellings and a wine shop.
