From the former Favignana prison to the Bourbon Polverificio: tourism investment opportunities in Italy
A tourist future for the former prison and fort of Favignana
The former prison on the Sicilian island of Favignana is suitable for conversion into a residence or tourist accommodation and cultural and social activities. The property covers an area of approximately 1,573 square metres and consists of an open area and a main building of approximately 325 square metres (originally used as dormitories and isolation cells). The owner is the Agenzia del Demanio. A long-term lease is proposed for redevelopment through a public tender. The other investment opportunity in Favignana is Fort San Giacomo, over 20,000 square metres in the centre of the island, part of a larger system of fortifications built to protect against pirate raids and later used as a penitentiary. The fort was built by order of Ruggero I d'Altavilla.
