From the Real Polverificio Borbonico a cultural tourism centre

An overall plan is envisaged for the Real Polverificio Borbonico in Scafati (Salerno) with the creation of a tourist-cultural pole that enhances the complex from a cultural, biological, botanical, digital and sustainable point of view, in synergy with all the other archaeological attractions. The area covers 160,000 square metres and includes historic buildings, a monumental complex, refineries, powder-processing workshops, warehouses of the Experimental Tobacco Institute, and other monumental structures dating back to the period 1852-1880, such as the Chapel of St. Barbara and the monumental entrance to the explosive area. The buildings are surrounded by a park with tree-lined avenues and green areas, bordered by an ancient boundary wall. Since 2021, the Pompeii Archaeological Park has undertaken restoration and reclamation work, maintaining the tree-lined avenue, recovering historical crops and restoring buildings such as the former Drying House and the guard hut. However, most of the buildings need further structural and functional rehabilitation in order to upgrade the historical and environmental site.
