From the former Favignana prison to the Bourbon Polverificio: tourism investment opportunities in Italy
New life for Trieste's old port
Porto Vivo is the redevelopment and regeneration project of the former port of Trieste, Porto Vecchio, one of the most important examples of maritime industrial archaeology in the Mediterranean. The 66-hectare area comprises five piers and 35 large buildings (hangars and warehouses), all located a short distance from the centre of Trieste. The redevelopment project will focus on high-tech activities to support the establishment of activities related to the cultural and creative industries, with the aim of enhancing both the tourism sector and the museum system, while creating spaces for sports and outdoor events. Divided into 6 functional lots, the project will include commercial, office and residential developments. The accommodation area will be built on existing assets totalling 14,300 square metres. A master plan and preliminary design have been developed by a private sponsor and approved by the municipality. The facility belongs to the Ursus Consortium (Municipality of Trieste, Friuli Venezia Giulia Region, Port Authority). The investment foresees the sale of full ownership and concessions through public tender
