Diemtigtal Nature Park: timber architecture and ancient legends

The Diemtigtal is a side valley of the Simmental, characterised by a thriving alpine economy and splendid historic timber-framed houses, which have earned it the prestigious Wakker Prize for landscape conservation. As well as 200 kilometres of signposted footpaths and mountain bike trails, the valley is steeped in evocative local legends, such as that of the Blauseeli lake, whose blue waters are said to be coloured by the tears of a young girl in love. For keen hikers, the Wiriehorn area offers adrenaline-fuelled descents on ‘monster rollers’ (giant scooters) and pleasant stops at the Nüegg mountain hotel. An excellent alternative for those seeking natural wellbeing is the Grimmialp, with its iron-rich springs known since the 19th century for their beneficial properties.
