Pfyn-Finges Nature Park: biodiversity and linguistic contrasts in Valais

Situated in the heart of the Canton of Valais, the Pfyn-Finges Nature Park stretches along the wild course of the River Rhône, creating one of Switzerland’s most diverse and dynamic ecosystems. Characterised by a marked climatic transition that combines dense Scots pine forests with almost Mediterranean-like steppes, the park also serves as a historic linguistic boundary between French-speaking and German-speaking Switzerland. Hikers can explore spectacular trails winding through limestone gorges and terraced vineyards, whilst the cycle routes along the river offer routes suitable for all abilities. This area also offers an interesting destination for birdwatchers, thanks to the presence of numerous rare bird species that find refuge in the riparian nature reserves along the riverbed.
